After a trauma, he presents with 8 spinal fractures in addition to fractures of his left hand and hip. He moves swiftly throughout his environment with a platform walker for support. After less than three weeks in the hospital he has returned home for a home care physical therapy visit; he is not in pain.
Meanwhile, down the street, there is another (admittedly much older) man whose wife was hospitalized for exacerbated congestive heart failure. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks and has also been discharged to home care; just before her hospitalization he had undergone an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee for a “loose body”. Three weeks have now passed and the man is complaining about the agony he is in, telling me, “My knee is killing me.”
